We all know Hot Wheels – the popular die-cast car toys that have remained popular with kids and adults alike for over 50 years. Less known, perhaps, are the Hot Wheels track sets, which combine imaginative play, problem solving, and creativity by letting kids build their own unique tracks using several interconnected sets. Because this toy line is less well known, today we’ve decided to review the 5 best Hot Wheels tracks for sale.
Any of these Hot Wheels tracks are guaranteed to put a smile on the face of any child – and most of them are fun for adults, too. And if you’re new to these popular playsets and have any questions, we’ve included an in-depth guide to “everything you need to know” at the bottom of the article, after the reviews proper.
Best Hot Wheels Track Set Reviews
Different kids will want different things when they (or their parents) are buying a Hot Wheels race track. We’ve considered a wide range track sets for sale and picked out what we think are the best in all categories. Each Hot Wheels track set review contains a short list of specifications as well as what type of track enthusiast we think will get the most enjoyment out of each set.
Super Ultimate Garage Playset – Best Hot Wheels Track Set
The Hot Wheels Super Ultimate Garage Playset is a stone-cold classic. It’s priced at about $200 USD at time of writing – four times as much as most Hot Wheels track sets – but it’s well worth the money. It can hold over 140 cars, transports 23 cars at a time, and contains several mechanized parts including a circular elevator, a pterodactyl, and a gorilla reminiscent of King Kong. It’s great for inspiring imaginative play and even lets you race multiple cars side by side.
We think the Super Ultimate Garage Playset is the best Hot Wheels track for sale. But you don’t just have to take our word for it – this track set was also the winner of a 2018 Toy Of The Year award. Now that’s quality you can trust!
Spin Storm Playset
The Hot Wheels Spin Storm playset is a beautiful and unique-looking track set that includes lots of loops and three intersecting “crash zones.” It’s designed for two-person head-to-head racing, but players have to be careful if they don’t want their cars to smash into each other.
This is a great starter track set for kids who are just beginning their awesome Hot Wheels track collection, partially because it offers a ton of fun on its own for less than 50 dollars, and partially because it comes with a starting car.
Criss Cross Crash Track Set
It’s not our personal favorite, but others have argued that this might be the very best Hot Wheels track for sale. It’s certainly a contender for that title, thanks in large part to its challenging intersections, hairpin turns, motorized “super charger” boosters, and huge central crash zone. It contains more than 16 feet of track for $50 USD (at time of writing), comes with a car, and features parking spaces for easy storage.
Unfortunately, this track set is entirely self-contained, and does not connect to other Hot Wheels tracks. It also doesn’t work with all Hot Wheels cars, so make sure you don’t have any of the toys that are too crazy or too big for this racing playset.
Hot Wheels Track Builder System Race Crate
The Hot Wheels “Track Builder System” is a subset of the larger Hot Wheels track toy line. It’s designed to allow kids to build and design their own tracks, and emphasizes cool car stunts and jumps over “storytelling” play experiences.
If you’re a kid who loves to build things, or if “LEGO with cars” sounds like your child’s idea of a dream come true, the best way to get started with the Track Builder System is with this “race crate”, which combines the pieces needed for three massive stunts in a portable, reasonably-priced box set. And it easily combines with the other Track Builder System sets, allowing for potentially endless creativity and customization.
Hot Wheels Versus Track Set
The Hot Wheels Versus Track Set is a classic toy that’s beloved by many, and it’s by far the cheapest Hot Wheels track on this list. For about 30 dollars at time of writing you get two customizable cars, two ramps whose positions can be changed to create unique crashes, and a tablet/smart phone holder that lets you record the action.
Kids can try head-to-head racing or clamp things into the customizable cars and point the ramps towards each other to see what makes the most exciting crashes. This toy emphasizes imagination and experimentation, and while it may be small, it also connects to other track sets for a more long-term experience.
Everything You Need To Know About Hot Wheels Race Tracks
The first Hot Wheels racing track sets were released alongside the first Hot Wheels die-cast cars in 1968, more than 50 years from time of writing. The original track consisted of bright orange plastic road sections that could be combined to form a single oblong race track, complete with two “super chargers” that propelled each car to high speeds.
Because the tires on Hot Wheels cars were wider and harder than those of Matchbox cars, they created less friction and could drive on the tracks faster and more smoothly. The two toys were a match made in heaven, and both remain extremely popular today.
The modern Hot Wheels tracks include many elements of the original sets. Many of them still have super chargers, or at the very least other motorized parts designed to move the cars more quickly. They also continue to come in the now-iconic bright orange color. However, modern track sets are much more complex, and come in a huge variety of sets that are designed to be combined into unique tracks. We’ve long grown past the basic oval shape!
Technically, Hot Wheels track sets CAN be used with third-party die-cast cars, but it’s generally not recommended that you do so. Other car toys might be too big, or too small. They may not fit in the super chargers. And as we said before, Hot Wheels cars tend to drive better on the specially-designed plastic tracks, giving your child a more enjoyable and exciting experience.
