As the tech world and multicopter enthusiasts are getting excited about the new DJI product or products to be announced today (most likely the Phantom 3, but let’s not speculate further, we will just see), the main US competitor 3D Robotics is stealing some of the attention by announcing the launch of their new drone apparently called the Solo, this has now been launched and can be found on at a competitive price here.

Ex DJI executive Colin Guinn is now the head of 3DR and company received some venture backing recently, so they should be in good shape to release something a lot more exciting than their previous products. As much as I live DJI products, let’s hope the 3D Robotics Solo will be a strong contender because it would be great for consumers to have more choice and wide scale adoption should also be triggered by a more multipolar market.

3D Robotics gives us a lot more clue about what the new Solo will look like, in fact you can even see the product if you catch the right moments in their teaser video below. If you don’t like to hunt for the right frames, scroll down further, Moreflying1 did that for you). By the way, kudos to 3DR, this teaser video is awesome.

So it seems that the Solo will have an integrated “smart” battery which might or might not be more expensive as 3DR has always been pretty low-key with their pricing. The other thing that seems imminent is a 3 axis gimbal which is actually something the 3DR Solo could not be a reasonable player without, at least to my opinion.

We are looking forward to some exciting times folks, let’s see what DJI announces today and we only have to wait until Monday to see full specs on the Solo. Yay, drones are good!
