french authorities are using drones to catch dangerous drivers

We’ve all seen how drones are continuing to help in many aspects of life. Not only are they being used for personal hobbies, but there are also many companies that are using them to assist with day-to-day things. Security companies are using them keep an eye on things, and places like Amazon are even using them to deliver orders. They’ve been used to assist with finding survivors after tragic events and also to survey damage. It’s no surprise that the authorities are now enlisting the help of drones in an effort to make the roads safer.

drone cops using drones to catch dangerous drivers

In the Southwest of France, Bordeaux to be exact, police are using a mutlirotor eye in the sky in an effort to catch lawbreakers. The trial for this new method of maintaining the law began over the summer and had proven to be quite effective. They have handed out hundreds of tickets to their law-breaking citizens and are noticing a huge decline in laws broken already.

These drones fly above the roads while providing a livestream feed to officers on the ground. This assists them to easily find the culprits. Once an unsafe driver has been spotted, the drone’s cameras track the vehicle before calling in traffic cops who pull over the driver. These drones are responsible for 15 to 20 people being pulled over in an hour.

Those that are opposed to this new tool for tracking dangerous drivers have only one excuse as to why they think it is a bad idea. They say that motorists may be tempted to take their eyes off the road and search the sky in an effort to see these drones. Since there is so little opposition, France is considering using the drones in other areas.

These drones aren’t being used to detect speed, but they can easily spot dangerous drivers. With police being hidden behind the trees and the drone taking to the sky above busy highways, they can quickly and easily spot any drivers that present a problem. Motorcycle cops quickly receive the information regarding the suspected dangerous driver and can quickly pull them to the side while another group of police stand by to issue on-the-spot fines.

As long as the drones are effective in assisting officers with providing safety, their popularity will continue to grow. It’s safe to expect other countries to pick up on this idea in the near future, especially since France wants to extend this drone project to other areas since it is so effective. Reducing the cost of improving public safety and also holding dangerous drivers accountable for their driving are the main reasons that this use of drones will continue to grow.
